Hi, my name is Anabel Miller. I am from Grand Rapids Michigan and in the fall of 2021, I will be in 11th grade. I have been riding bikes for as long as I can remember. The first race that I ever competed in was the one mile "Snow Cone" race during the Iceman Cometh Challenge weekend on my bike with training wheels. The first time that I ever did a mountain bike race beyond Snow Cone was when I was in 7th grade which was a race in the MiSCA (Michigan Scholastic Mountain Bike Alliance) series. MiSCA is similar to NICA where they are a youth-only racing league with races for Elementary schoolers all the way up to Varsity High Schoolers. In 7th grade, I raced in the "Middle School" category. I finished in 5th place at the first race and instantly fell in love with the sport and racing. Now, almost 5 years later, my love for the sport has continued to grow, and I am still going strong!
Currently, I mainly race in cross country mountain bike races. I also do some cyclocross, gravel, and fat tire racing; however, my favorite discipline is definetly mountain biking. For me, mountain biking is calming because of how peaceful it is to ride though the woods and nature. Mountain biking is also where I can be competative and excited about racing. I love mountain biking because I can go on a chill relaxed ride, hard training ride, fun ride with friends, or a super competative race, and have the most fun ever while doing it!
In the year of 2020, there was the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. I was lucky, however, in the fact that the MiSCA series was able to put on a safe race series for us to race in. All of the races were time trials that year to be able to uphold social distancig. I won the Varisty High School Girls series and was the State Champion for that season. One of my goals for 2021 is to defend that title and win the series to be the State Champion agian. This series starts in late August and goes until mid-October. Also, for 2021, I am planning on racing in USAC Mountain Bike Nationals in Winter Park, Colorado. It will be my first time at Mountain Bike Nationals. My goal for this race is to have a strong race that I am proud of since I do not know what a good positioning goal would be for me yet and also since it is my first time going to mountain bike nationals. This race will be in early-July. Finally, I am planning on racing some of the WORS series races in Wisconsin this spring. I will be using these races as preparation for USAC Mountain Bike Nationals. My goal for the WORS series races will depend on what catagory that I am racing in. However, I have never raced outside of Michigan before, so after the first race, I will be able to determine good placing goals for myslef. For now, I want to have a strong race that I can be proud of and one where I can highlight places that I need to improve on before nationals.
My XC race bike is an Ibis DV9. I got it in January 2021 and I love it. It is a carbon hardtail and I just added a dropper post. My fat bike is a Fatback Skookum. I rode this bike for mountain biking for a while (I put mountain bike wheels and tires on it during the summer for racing/riding); however, now I have converted it to fully a fat bike. This bike is also a carbon hardtail with a carbon Fatback fork. Finally, I have a CX bike which I use as a gravel training bike also. It is a Kona Jake the Snake with an aluminum frame and a carbon fork.
